Visual Research in Literature studies
Gaining new insights through visual methods
Much has changed in the humanities in the recent years, it has moved toward digital work and research. The use of visual means plays an equally important role. Digital and visual research methods open up new possibilities, especially for literary studies. As a discipline whose research results are difficult to understand and verify, it could benefit from this change. My master’s thesis examines how new insights can be gained in literary studies through visual digital research methods.

Practical part – an interactive tool
The program “Visual Poe” was developed as the practical part of the master thesis. The program automatically reads, analyses and visualises twelve short stories by Edgar Allan Poe. This should lead to insights that go beyond classical text analysis. The visualization is intended to enable a new kind of research in literary studies and to offer new views and access to a text. The project shows what contribution a visual method can make to research in literary studies and how a new solution to a scientific problem can be offered by linking several disciplines.
